View Full Version : More most used apps

Anyone managed to get more than 6 (a pitiful number) of most used apps on the left half of the start menu? I've increased the height of the start menu to fill the height of my monitor, but I still only get 6 most used apps. Like most people I use more than 6 things often!

That new start menu is a horror! There is no way to organize things in
categories, all you get is an alphabetical listing of all the
applications that are in the database, with, I now learn from you, at
most 6 most-used shortcuts on the root of the menu. The database behind
the menu cannot be edited, and I've read you're limited to 500 items; I
hear some people have already hit the limit.

Why couldn't they have coded one Xp/7-like menu when you are in desktop
mode and one touch-friendly menu (what we get now) for when you are in
tablet mode? I hear Start10 see 20,000 downloads a day right now...

Regards,

You can edit the start menu and add your own folders and put your own software in a categorized system.
I simply add folders like --xxxxx or ---yyyyyyy using the --- makes them sort first in that horrid alphabetical list.
But it saves me having to scroll down to find what I want.

"C:\Users\Alan\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\St art Menu\Programs" is your user programs
"C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs" are the admin/all users programs.

And I haven't tried this in windows 10 yet, but it worked in Windows 8.1

The latter link does not work in win10 like it does in 8. It makes that same silly long alpha list of software. So
it must be something goofy they did to the underlying engine. Good ole Microsoft.

You don't need the start menu at all.
Make a directory.
Put in links to every program you ever need.
Put a link to the directory on the desktop.
Point/click/use till you drop.
It's not rocket science.

Horror is an understatement.

How do apps I've never used (I just upgraded to Win10) even get on the
list!?!
Why have "they" decided from the get-go that 'Get Skype' (which I have
never used anywhere, or even seen) is a "most used"app.

I take it back that 10 was bound to be better than 8. So far, It ain't.
And it won't let me even delete the tiles for the crap, let alone uninstall
it.

Fortunately this is only on a spare "experiment" laptop.
My workaday, actual use, get-things-done PC will stay on Win7, and I won't
be able to get a new one (with bigger screen I really need) anytime soon,
darn it.
Maybe when the dust has time to settle a bit I'll give something like
Start10 a try.

No problem on Win10 upgraded from 7 or 8 uninstalling apps and removing
them.
- rt click, uninstall worked here. Note: Some apps are part of a
package, in those cases, uninstalling one uninstalls all in the same
package.

Why not just put links to apps and files/folders on the desktop?

They'll get swept out with time.

I've deleted all the tiles from the menu.

There must be an MRU entry in the registry somewhere to change the amount of recent apps it shows..... I've looked through the whole registry but can't find it. Anyone know where I should be looking?

Ah, so it "scans" the "old" StartMenu folders? Better than I thought.
Still, why use a database if it's going to replicate the classic start
menu anyway? I love it the way was before, I can "build" my start menu
any which was I want because it replicates the file system structure. I
don't want an alphabetical list, I get lost, lol.

Thanks for the dash tip.

Best Regards,
