View Full Version : Upgrade to Windows 10 Home

I have been wondering when MS would upgrade my computer. This morning I
noticed that in the update window it said the last up update failed.

I check the update history and found that Window 10 update had
consistently failed with the following message.

What does this mean and what do I do to correct the problem?

I always run the computer in the local account, do the computer have to
be in the MS account for the upgrade to occur?

My computer never had an MS account with Win8.1 and still doesn't after
the Win10 upgrade.

If I delete the $window.~bt directory will a fresh copy of the install
files be created?

Two DVDs I downloaded yesterday, were corrupted and short.
And with no checksum available, it's not possible to determine
this by inspection. Not like you can do with a Linux
LiveCD, where every DVD is the same download file, and
checksums can be used to verify correctness.

If you need *real* DVDs, typically the MSDN subscription
DVDs are the ones to own. They won't fail you. And, they
come with a solid and dependable checksum (SHA1).

As for the original complaint in the thread, I would
be looking for setupact.log. There are several. There
is also a rollback folder, which gets populated with
some sort of log, during rollback. This install instance
probably didn't even start, so the log should be short.

If C:\$WINDOWS.~BT is not in your search, then manual
inspection of what is in there, may be required. To find
all possible .log files.

Now, this thread is a little funny :-)
Users vs Helpers, best two out of three falls.

"upgrade requires customer user action.

For example, the message may be present if one
or more applications or disk utilities that
need to be uninstalled before upgrading."

And of course, without a user interface, you're not
being told this. So some munchkins in the background
back in Redmond, work on preparing an install script
to remove your AVG, and retry the upgrade install.
I think that's the idea. Sorta like a valet service.

Although I'd be looking in that log file, for the
evidence. People hate surprises, like seeing their
copy of Win10 arrive, and AVG has gone missing.
For the less savvy users, they might not even
realize some application (like AVG) got removed.

There are many instances of this error on the web as well as a fix for
it. I have a system here that was having the exact same message. It
lasted about 4 days and then it downloaded all by itself and was ready
to go. I have not done the actual upgrade on it as of yet but the
problem did cure itself. There are many video's on youtube as to how to
bypass that error or you can just simply give it a few days and it might
cure itself

The question would be, what would the files be made from ?

Windows Update --> SoftwareDistribution (BITS file) --> Unpack into ~BT.

The BITS file could be thrown away, after the transfer
to ~BT is complete. If you toss ~BT, there are no more
3GB files to be had.

It says here that GWX uses config.xml to track
progress.

https://techjourney.net/disable-remove-get-windows-10-upgrade-reservation-notification-system-tray-icon/

None, AnticipationUX, Reservation, Reserved, RTM, GA,
UpgradeDetected, UpgradeDownloadInProgress, UpgradeDownloaded,
UpgradeReadyToInstall, UpgradeReadySetupInProgress,
UpgradeSetupCompatBlock, UpgradeSetupRolledBack,
UpgradeSetupFailed, UpgradeSetupComplete

But you'd need to know what the initial config.xml says,
to meddle with it. And I thought I'd read somewhere,
that the config was protected from user modification.
So it would put back a copy if you had attempted
to adjust it.

Would uninstalling KB3035583 and putting it back, reset
the process ? Who knows.

While it says it no where it appears the creation media tool is the
front end to either create the ISO file or install windows 10.

Anyway I downloaded the creation tool and when I ran it selected install
on this computer. It has now downloaded the installation file and is
about half way through the installation process.

It is good thing I did this this morning, as I am in the middle fighting
with ATT over a payment they placed in the wrong account. At least they
pretend to be customer oriented as they send you to every office in the
world.

MS does not have a real customer service group. You get some cryptic
instruction and then make your best guess as to what they mean

Lots of web traffic about this, perhaps this helps:

On my machine it didn't but this did:

Normally, the logged-in user is in the Administrator Group.
Hard to believe this approach is necessary.

On the other hand, there is a control somewhere, which determines
who can run Windows update. Red arrow here.

If you have not seen the notice that Windows 10 is ready to install, the
Windows Update errors indicate that the bits are still being downloaded
and/or the ability to download the bits have been interrupted.
