Probably the only way to completely protect yourself today is to
run you W? computer through another home server that is running an
external firewall like IPFire or Endian. Everything needs to be
blocked and opened on an individual basis. It would take some work
at first, but would protect from Windows accessing the web at will,
especially by ignoring and getting around the firewall. It would
also protect people using Intel computers from the mystery
additional chip that runs on top of the Intel chip from accessing
the web. This would not protect from the feds accessing your
computer through surreptitious wifi connections. Except in
laptops, wifi could be easily unplugged.

I'd suggest one of these:-
http://routerboard.com/RB450G

It's a very capable router/firewall with console and GUI access methods.
Here in the UK, it also terminates my ISP's PPPoE connection to me.
This has some stubstancial benefits for sharing a static IP.

What does the firewall do, strip out the PPPoE from the in and
out packets?
