How many hours is normal for the system Maintenance to Run?

It has been running for about three hours now the CPU activity is near
zero and so in the Disk Activity

After fighting this all day yesterday it looks like my problems may have
been with the system maintenance, or defender.

Surprise, My laptop is on only when I am using it. Since System
maintenance ran for so long it may have been trying to run for a couple
of days causing the apparent lock up,

OR

Since I am using McAfee and Defender was turned off, it may have been
trying to up date again causing the apparent lockups. There were
several Defender updates that were listed as failing to install. (IT
WAS TURNED OFF)

Am I going to have to let my portable laptop run 24 hours per day so
Windows 10 can do its maintenance?

Something for me to look forward to......

My desktop has had 4 updates since 7/29 install; the laptop is still
at the 7/29 date for the "last" install......
