I updated to Windows 10 a about 10 days ago. For a while all of my
programs worked. Then Word Perfect started locking up. now McAfee is not
working the way it should

I have decided to go back to Window 8.1 as I was very satisfied with
it's performance and all of my programs worked.

It I roll back to Windows 8.1 from Windows 10 is it a true roll back or
is it just a disguised Windows 10 pretending to be Windows 8.1/

Will programs that previously worked under Windows 8.1 work when I roll
back.

Unless someone tells Windows 10 to not keep anything during the upgrade
then the downgrade is real.

During the upgrade your old windows operating system is copied over to a
folder entitled windows.old. When you roll back it basically deletes
the new windows and renames the windows.old to take it's place.

For some the roll back has taken as little as 20 minutes but the time
varies based on the PC's hardware speed and capabilities.

I had to roll back one machine that needed different drivers than what I
had available or could find right away and it had not yet received the
windows invitation icon. Later in the week the windows upgrade icon
showed up and a subsequent upgrade to Windows 10 went smoothly.

I'm just glad none of the PC's I normally deal with are Sony Vaio
machines after reading their warning message about not attempting to do
an upgrade until Sony finishes writing Windows 10 drivers, if ever.

We keep hearing stories.

Remember that the two OSes are contained in
C:\Windows.old and C:\Windows.

The C:\Program Files would be separate from those.

The programs will use the registry settings stored
in either of the Windows partitions. So when you
restore to Win8.1, the C:\Windows.old registry
files should be in usage again.

I cannot account for any bizarre behavior when going
back, except to say that Win10 might remove a program
from Program Files if it feels like it. And it isn't
likely to put a program back in the Program Files
folder, as there's no storage for it that I've heard of.

Of the two options:

1) "I made a backup before I started this nonsense"
2) Use the built-in roll back option

I would choose (1) for peace of mind. In the
current Win10 environment, I would copy my USENET
posting folder (500MB), my bookmarks files (two of them),
my Email folder, and then use my chosen method
for backing out. Confident that I had the stuff that
mattered stored somewhere (the current version of it).

Sony never bothered to even provide Windows 8 drivers for my Windows
7-bundled VPCCW23FD from 2010 so I wouldn't hold my breath for Windows
10 drivers, especially since the Vaio line has been sold off.

I believe MS does say somewhere that you may have to reinstall some
programs after roll-back to get them to work properly.

My experience .... no ... HP laptop OEM win8 wouldn't upgrade to 8.1,
so new install done, win 8.1 pro installed, activated - happily used
with no problems.

Did the upgrade to 10, refused to install without a key. Used KMS
activation key, then wouldn't activate with real key. Rolled back to
8.1 pro - no way. Returned to 8.1 core edition.
