So, then, you have two iso files on your desktop?
Have a look in your C: drive. You might be interested in two files
there; $WINDOWS.~BT and $Windows.~WS.

I think they're hidden by default, so might need to tick "Show hidden
files" in Folder Options.

And when they're revealed the answer as to why the 64-bit download
failed will also come to light.
It could be that MS is at fault here, if it took as long as the OP says
to come up with a fail message.

I can confirm that. Using the link you provided from a Windows machine
offers the Media Creation tool, from a Linux machine it offers you a
link to the .ISO downloads.

I have both the .isos from the MCT and from the direct downloads, will
compare them to see if there are any differences. I'm curious to see if
the MCT does any 'customisation' of the .iso.

You can use K3b (the CD and DVD Kreator - http://www.k3b.org/) to create
a DVD from ISO in Linux.

As expected; as they should.

Of course they do, as has been pointed out numerous times in the last few
days, across multiple threads. Win 7 & 8 give you the option to directly
upgrade or download/create ISO's.

I can't, because having tried several times, it won't download. The
download aborts part way through at different times.

I've given up trying - I have better things to do with my time and am
not going to upgrade to Win10 anyway. There's too many privacy issues,
even with all the settings dialled down, the non-stop talking to the
mothership, and the enforced automatic updates all put me off it.

If I do change OS (probably when Win7 reaches end of life), it'll be to
a proper OS: Linux.

Having one last try with wget from the command line. Downloading now, the
wildly varying download speeds suggest M$'s servers are struggling.

English_x32.iso 6%[===> ] 191.75M 1.65MB/s eta 31m 29s

Would be much happier if I had md5sums to check though.

It's not the OS that is doing anything different, it's the server at M$
looking at the browser's User-Agent string and offering a different page
according to what it sees.

Your wish is my command :)

This is an edited cut'n'paste of the command used to download the two ISO images
using wget from the Linux command line. The actual URLs appended a long
identifying string which I have omitted for clarity. Without this you get a "403
Forbidden" error when attempting to download.

[me@linuxbox downloaded ISO]$ wget "http://software-download.microsoft.com/pr/Win
10_English_x32.iso"

HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 200 OK
Length: 3052865536 (2.8G) [application/octet-stream]

[me@linuxbox downloaded ISO]$ wget "http://software-download.microsoft.com/pr/Win
10_English_x64.iso"

HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 200 OK
Length: 4083853312 (3.8G) [application/octet-stream]

[me@linuxbox downloaded ISO]$ ls -l
total 6976272
-rw-rw-r-- 1 me users 3052865536 Jul 11 05:29 Win10_English_x32.iso
-rw-rw-r-- 1 me users 4083853312 Jul 10 22:39 Win10_English_x64.iso

[me@linuxbox downloaded ISO]$ md5sum *.iso

99feb0f9e7262b7eefa460840a31b59d Win10_English_x32.iso
23e397a21a9e01f141c64b7e1260314a Win10_English_x64.iso

I'd be interested to see how yours compare.

Fyi...using a supported o/s and browser the Media Creation Tool provides
the ability to create usb/dvd media. Unlike the iso download option when
not using a supported o/s or browser also verified the integrity of the
download file vs. the host file.

That's very good to hear, thank you :)

<troll>
Pity we needed to use a /proper/ OS to download the files intact...
