View Full Version : Can't Install Windows XP Pro

When I boot from the installation disk, either from my CDRW or DVD
drive, the XP installation process is interrupted early on with the
following message:

"Windows Setup Error. File setuppd.sys could not be loaded.
The error code is 7.
Setup cannot continue.
Press any key to exit."

Since the hard drive is known to be good and the same problem occurs
when booting from either of two devices, I am at a loss to solve the
problem.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Please reply via email.

Thanks,

HaynaGuy

Read ""STOP 0x0000008e" Error Message During Windows XP Setup"

Read this Knowledge base article, it might provide some answers:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=330181

I've also seen the problem occur because of bad memory. Also, a bad
motherboard might be the cause.

Good Luck and post back if you get it resolved.

Patrick,

After reading the infor in the link you provided, by trial and error I
found one of my two 256mb memory modules to be the problem!

One was a Kingston module (recommended by my mobo mfgr) and the other
an Rkbyte which is not on Abit's recommended list. When I pulled the
Rkbye strip from the second slot, the XP installation ran fine.

I should have know. When I installed the same Rkbye module in my
other computer which has been up and running for over a year, it
would still run Windows XP but thrings quickly broke down with a
variety of error messages.

The thing that confused me is that I was actually able to fdisk,
format and copy files to and from the C: drive using a Windows Me
startup disk for the test. Also the machine recognized the full 512k
of RAM. It seems like the Rkbye strip is not so much motherboard
incompatible but Windows XP incompatible.

Thanks again for your tip!

John

Thanks for your tip. I received another identical tip and your links
supplied the clue that lead me to a cure to my problem... removal of
one of two memory modules.
