lost dialing tone

i have just partitioned my drive and installed xp, but i
can't seem to get xp to recognise my modem.
firstly it calls it another name ;best fax moden. while my
98 sees it as generic soft56 fax voice speakerphone.
I have no trouble with connecting on 98 at all.
i've tried to find out if its just a compatability problem
but don't seem to be having any luck.
hope the question isn't too dumb but im pretty green at 98
never mind xp.
