Pop up windows through messenger

I just recently boughta new laptop with xp. i have a large
number of pop-ups that I believe come from messenger
mainly selling products to stop the siad pop-ups! but also
selling stuff. It si very anoying I can stop it by
blocking the msgr program with norton however that is no
good since when the computer re-boots messenger will not
open. Do you have a fix.I did not get these in win 2000
