This symptom may be caused by the FriendsGreetings
worm. Have you by any chance recently opened an e-mail
from FriendsGreetings.com, and did you try to open the
e-card, and subsequently download software that was
required to see the card?
If so, go here to learn more, including removal:

See http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm, Line 240, Left column.
Download the REG file and save it to your hard drive. Locate the file you
just downloaded and double click it. Answer Yes to the Import prompt. Next,
click Start, Run and enter TASKMGR.EXE On the Processes tab, locate the
Explorer.exe process and highlight it. Click the End Process button, and
answer Yes, to the warning prompt. Next, in Task Manager, click File, New
Task and enter EXPLORER.EXE
A new version of this fix is in the works that will handle the job of ending
the Explorer process for you.

Chris,
I'm not Doug, but I did visit Kelly's site and the "reg" file downloads
without a problem.

No, I didn't realize that she'd made the changes when I posted it. Found out
when I saw your post. Its been fixed now. There's also a VBS version in
the works that takes care of the whole process for you.
