View Full Version : XP and scheduling virus scans

OK, I have always scheduled to do complete virus scans at night when no
one is on the computer. With XP now, they will not run. As you know, when
you come in after the screen saver has kicked in, you have to re-select
which user account you want. I am assuming that when it "logs you out" to
start the screen saver, the virus scan does not work since it is only set up
in one profile. How can I get it to run regardless of who is or isn't
logged in? Getting tired of having to manual scan all the time.

Are you setting up the scheduled scan through Scheduled Tasks in the
Control Panel? If so, you can set the ID and password of the account to
run under in the properties for the task. On the Task tab of the
properties for the task enter the user name the task should run under in
the run as box. Click the set password button and enter the password that
the user in the run as box uses to log on. Note that a scheduled task
will not run without both a user name and password, meaning an account
with a blank password won't work.

I was trying to use the built in scheduling client in Norton System works,
like I had always done in Win98 and WinME. Perhaps I should post to a
Norton group and see if anyone knows of a way to set up Norton itself to run
the scheduled tasks regardless of whether anyone is currently logged in or
not. Thanks for the tips, this group always has such quick response time!
