View Full Version : Default beep

Currently running XP Home with two logins. One for=20
myself and the other for my fianc=E9e. For some reason,=20
the default beep no longer exists on my login, but does=20
on hers. This causes an annoying beep from my login=20
whenever I receive new mail or someone logs on=20
messenger. =20
Where has the default beep gone from my sound schemes?

The probable answer to this is that when two users are logged into the same
computer at the same time, that one of the logins supercedes the other for
control of the devices. You should logoff of both users and then log in as
you and see if the sounds return. If this still does not work for you, then
check the control panel and see if your sound settings have changed. Hope
this helps...

Problem is that I checked the settings and they are=20
exactly the same as my fianc=E9e's except for one thing. =20
The default beep program event no longer exists under my=20
profile but it does under hers. In other words the actual=20
event such as new mail or critical stop. It is normally=20
found between the Critical Stop and Device Connect=20
program events. Any ideas how I can correct this?

To restore Default Beep you have to hack the registry. =20
If you have the nerve. Sorry. But there is an easy way=20
to do it.
First, set up a brand new user account on XP, open that=20
account, and check the sound menu. If you find Default=20
Beep, you're ready to proceed.
Second, select the Default Beep sound event and change it=20
to something with a really obnoxious name, like Jungle=20
Default.
Next, go the Start menu and run REGEDIT. Click open the=20
folder for HKEY_CURRENT_USER
Then, using the drop-down menus at the top, select EDIT -=20
FIND and search for the obnoxious name. Copy down=20
EXACTLY the names of the folders and subfolders where you=20
found it. It's probably in AppEvents - Schemes - Apps -
.Default - .Default - .Current
Note that the .Default and .Current folders have a dot at=20
the beginning of the name. There are probably TWO=20
folders under .Default - .Default, named .Current=20
and .Default - write down EXACTLY everything in those two=20
folders, including the data values.
Now, exit Registry Editor and the user account. Switch=20
to the User Account with the Missing Default Beep. =20
Start REGEDIT and go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER. The .Default -
.Default - .Current sub-folder will be missing. You=20
have to right-click the location where .Default -
.Default - .Current belongs, select NEW KEY, and add=20
back all the missing sub-folders.
REMEMBER: The folder locations and names (aka "keys") and=20
data values you are adding MUST EXACTLY match what is in=20
the other user account. Otherwise, well.........=20
(Remember, this is free advice you are taking at your own=20
risk.)
Finally, on the right side of the screen, under Name-Type-
Data, right-click to bring up MODIFY and change the data=20
values to EXACTLY what you wrote down from the other user=20
account.
You're done. Exit Regedit, go to Control Panel, select=20
the sound events, and if you have done everything right,=20
you will find Default Beep restored to your system.
