My WindowsXP professional has started restarting automatically (it gives you
a minute to save your work) because it says that the Remote Procedure Call
(RPC) service has crashed.

This always happens a few minutes after connecting to the internet. Has
anyone any ideas?

Yes, the virus writer who created the new worm. You didn't
install the patch a month ago and you are infected.
You need to visit McAfee or Norton websites for the virus
removal tool, update your anti-virus software and install
all the MS critical updates.

Thank you very much for the assistance. I used the Symantec worm remover and
then installed the Microsoft patch and am now back to normal.
