i check my running programs regulary and i noticed that i
had IEXPLORER.EXE and alg.exe running. i wasn't surfing
the net so there shouldn't an IEXPLORER.EXE running or
should there? also i assume alg.exe is something to do
with firewalls but i don't have any up and running so can
someone please tell me what this alg.exe really is and
why has it only just appeared when i haven't done
anything differently.

Alg.exe belongs to the services shipped with Windows XP.

You can find it in the services consolu under "Application Layer
Gateway Service". If you don't use firewall bult-in Windows XP then
you can disable this service.
