I have received an e-mail from Microsoft Network Public
Services, subject: Internet Security Pack. There is an
attachment and the instruction to install now. All
previous updates have been direct and not via e-mail.
Before opening the attachment could I have reassurance
that this is genuine Microsoft and not a virus carrier.

Hi,

this is a known hoax. As you noticed Microsoft never sends out a patch on
e-mails. They will send out only warnings containing link to Microsoft
servers with more details how to download the patch.

You can also always use www.windowsupdate.com

Please read the following links

and
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/security/policy/swdist.asp

Microsoft never distributes software directly via e-mail.

Thanks to Mike [MSFT], dav, Curt, and Miha. I am glad
that I asked. I am new to Newsgroups and wonder whether
it is normal to post a thankyou message or does this
clutter up the message boards?

Bob, Curt and Miha,
I found a good way to almost get rid of these fake M$ messages is to
define a mail filter, basically with the conditions:
From contains Microsoft, Has attachment, Delete on Mail Server. Seems
to work, haven't seen any of these for while:-)

I wonder however why the rule "message contains": "Penis or
Enlargement or Pills or Viagra (or more such ****)don't work. My inbox
is full of that every day. Any idea, what to configure better in OE?

Did so after many confirmed M$ wont ever send anything useful as mail
attachment.
