Security patch

I have a Sony Notebook laptop that has Windows XP Home
Edition installed on it. I wanted to download and
install the new security patch. First of all which one
is it? Secondly, every time I attempt to do a windows
update it crashes my computer and I lose everything I
have done that day. I ended up having to call Sony to
help me get my computer back up. But how can I get these
update if I continue crashing. I want to be protected.
Can anyone help me? Thank you!
