Can anyone verify the validity of an e-mail purporting to
be from Microsoft?
Subject: "Security update for Microsoft Windows.
First paragraph begins: "It has been widely reported
in the press and on Microsoft's own website that on July
16th we released a critical security bulletin (MS03-026)
and a patch regarding a vulnerability in the Windows
operating system....

Hi David,
If you didn't receive any attachment with executable then it is OK.
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/security/news/patch_hoax.asp
Microsoft has released press and other releases about MS03-026
vulnerability...
You should check out:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/security_bulletins/ms03-026.asp and
install the patches. Best way would still be by visiting
www.windowsupdate.com -> Scan For Updates...
I hope this helps you out.

Microsoft never ever issues security updates through e-mail. What you are
reading is an IQ test; if you fall for it, your IQ is low.

There is a new mail going around that contains a link to a bogus site
instead of an attachment. The sender address appears as
(the name in place of the xxx's varies) but that is
not a valid MS address.
So need to add to this caution: if you want to check up on a possible new
update, use the links on your start menu or help file to get to the Windows
Update site.
