I set the Legal Notice Caption and Text, then set
permissions on the registry key to prevent anyone but the
primary administrator from being able to read or alter
the key. Now I can't start XP.

I tried reinstalling XP using the Repair option, but to
no avail.

I installed XP into a different folder then tried to load
the sytem hive and the software hive from the first
installation, but couldn't find an key entry
under 'winlogon'.

The error message that I get when I try to start XP is:
Stop d0000017 unknown hard error.

Is my first installation toast? or can I still recover
it?
