Is this some type of newsgroup virus or something? Today everybody and their
dog seems to be asking if their version of windows XP is 32-bit or 64-bit.

The reason why the question is appearing so frequently in the last day or so
is because everyone who downloads the patch to protect and deal with the
MSBLAST worm is offered a choice of patches for the 32-bit or 64-bit.
Most users have never considered this possibility before so they are seeking
information trying to find out what there system is in order to download the
appropriate patch.
Just for the record for other's reading this, AGAIN, if you have to ask, you
have 32-bit. Home Edition isn't available in 64-bit and only users with
special needs running Intel's Itanium processor have the 64-bit version of
XP. If you have a Pentium system, any Pentium system, you are using the
32-bit version of XP.

HRmmm.. I just made an unofficial count of the number of unique "32 or 64?"
posts today, and there were at LEAST 16, probably a few more i missed.
I can't page-down to a position in my outlook headers-viewer where there
ISNT a "32 or 64?" somewhere (today and yesterday only...)
BTW..
How do i tell if my XP is 32 or 64 bits?
buahahahaaaa..

AJ,
I can say from my perspective that the messaging around the differences
between 32-bit and 64-bit is somewhat lacking. Both fixes are posted on
the fix site, but with no way of knowing which should be picked. The easy
answer is if you don't know, then you have 32-bit; however my mom would
never know the difference. I am working on formally messaging this
information to Microsoft customers and ask for your patience while the
content creation and delivery process is completed.

Mike, what Microsoft should really do is just put a link next to the
downloads,
"How to determine which version of Windows you are running".
Shouldn't be to difficult for them to do.

Have you also checked to see how many people ask the question when the
same question is asked and answered just a line or two above. What are
these people blind, stupid or both? And how long does one have to be
using a computer to know a simple thing such as whether you have 32 or
64 bits? There are a lot of people out there who should turn in their
computers for a "play station". And many of them probably would fail
using them.
However there is now a race on as to how many people are asking for help
with the Worm. I just resent having to scroll past all the idiots to
read something that I might be interested in. Or find a question that I
know the answer to. So that I may assist someone. I just feel like
ranting today, so forgive me. :-(
