if not then Hopefully you bought the expensive
NON_UPGRADE version of WINDOWS XP wich you can install
from DOS.

If he has a hardware issue that's blocking the upgrade, he still won't be
able to install XP. Even if he had the full version of XP, if he has a
hardware issue, it will block setup.

There is no DOS install for XP. You either boot from the CD or use the
downloadable boot floppies on computers without the ability to boot from the
CD.
