The middle area on the bottom of the screen, between the Start button on the
left and the clock on the right - what is it called now?
In Win 98, as in XP, it displays programs you opened. But, in Win98 you
could also drag and drop icons down to this area and create a one click
opening of programs. This obviated closing the current window to find an
icon on the desktop.
When I try to drag and drop icons there now, nothing 'sticks'. Tired of
cloing windows every time I want to load another program. Suggestions?

Taskbar displays running programs. Also can display the Quick Launch Bar,
where you can create shortcuts to programs.
Making Quick Launch visible: right click on the taskbar, on the menu
Taskbars select Quick Launch. (Note also you can lock or unlock the tastbar)

This bar is known as the taskbar and holds the start menu, system tray &
clock, and also various toolbars.
To place items onto your quicklaunch toolbar, simply unlock the taskbar by
right clicking in an empty space and un checking the lock item.
Now you can drag, drop, resize and move the quicklaunch about.
You can lock it again to prevent accidentaly dragging any items off.
