Windows updates;security patch

On my home computer which uses windows xp home addition, I
am trying to install current windows updates from the
microsoft web=site. I am especially trying to install the
new so-called "security patch" I eventually got to a
dialogue box which, after several hour seems to have
sucsessfully "down-loaded' the updates. The top line of
the box, finally was full of blue rectanges. But the
second line in the box, labled "install" shows no
progress. I know the items are somewhere in my computer
but I have not been able to figure out how to install them.
Any help would be appreciated.
