taskbar info

I don't know what I did but ... normally when one has
more than one program operating, e.g., word and excel,
when you minimize the program an icon is placed on the
taskbar and when you go back to the taskbar and click on
it, you retrieve the program. this is not happening
anymore - that is, when I minimize the program, no icon
is placed on the taskbar.
How do I fix this?
