I may need to reformat my drive and reinstall windows
XP. How do I reformat? After reformatting, how does I
install my "upgrade" disk? Is windows going to ask for a
previous version? if so, do I just put the 98 upgrade
disk in?

I am also thinking about installing Windows pro any
difference in the process? I think the Windows Pro
version is not the upgrade version

just boot from the CD and follow the instructions. Along the way you
will get a choice whether to reformat or not.

Thanks is it going to ask for a previous version since I
am using the upgrade?

Yes it will. Again, just follow the instructions when asked for evidence
of the previous version.

Below are step by step instructions. Yes, you will be asked for your
previous version. When asked, place it in the drive:
Boot with the XP CD in the drive. When you see the message on the boot
screen to "Press any key in order to boot from the CD," do so.

After loading drivers and files, you should be taken to a screen with
the following:

To Setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.
To Repair a Windows XP Installation using Recovery Console press R.
To Quit setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

In your case, press ENTER.

Agree to the License agreement by pressing F8.

You will then be taken to a screen with two options.

To repair the selected Windows XP installation press R.
To continue installing a fresh copy of Windows XP without repairing,
press ESC.

This will bring you to a partition map where you
can delete, create and format partitions.
Select the drive you wish to format, delete the partition, then create a new
partition, format as desired and continue with XP installation.

No special reformatting step is necessary. Just boot from the
Windows XP CD and follow the prompts. It will offer you the
choice of reformatting.

Yes and yes.

Both XP Home and Professional come in an Upgrade version, as well
as Full and OEM versions. For a clean installation, it's the same
for all versions except the upgrade, which will ask you for the
98 CD.
