After I installed SP1 and it asked me to restart my
computer, that's when it went into continuous restart. It
went into the Compaq screen, then Loading Win XP and it
restars again. Please help if you know how or if you know
what could be wrong???

Probably a System Failure class error. Windows XP has a default
setting to "Restart on failure" and that is probably what you are
seeing.

Try booting the computer into Safe Mode.

Turn it on and as soon as the first Compaq logo or other information
shows on the screen start tapping the F8 key. Keep tapping it rapidly
until the Windows XP Startup Menu appears and choose Safe Mode from
the Startup Menu.

When it has booted into Safe Mode use System Restore (from the
Accessories - System Tools menu) and choose the most recent restore
point that is prior to the installation of Service Pack 1. It will
almost certainly be the most recent of them all, based on your
reported problem.

Then go into Control Panel - System - Advanced and click on the
Settings button in the Startup and Recovery (bottom) section. In the
System Failure (middle) section click on the "automatically restart"
checkbox to clear it. That will stop the automatic reboots.

That should put you back to the pre-SP1 install status and you can
then shut down and restart normally. Hopefully the computer will now
work okay.

Then go to the HP/Compaq web site (www.compaq.com still works) and
search for any and all updates for your specific Compaq model and
Windows XP. Download and install these. Also search for any
technical support notes regarding XP Service Pack 1 and your specific
model of computer. Follow whatever instructions or advice these
articles contain.

Good luck

The perfect answer to this matter can be found in

I do not know if the link works this way but if not....this is the
text of the person who solved my problem (without knowing it....
;-)...)

Backup important files first.
These procedures should be safe, but just in case.
Perform a Repair Installation on the original Windows XP installation:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/xp_repair_install.htm
Follow closely, it is different than what you already did.
After the original installation of Windows XP is working properly,
delete the new install file "winxp".
Your Windows should be working like before.
When you are ready, install Service Pack 1 this way:
***PRINT THIS LIST***
It is best to resolve current issues BEFORE installing SP1.
First check to make sure you have all updated drivers.
You should have at least 2gb free space (Less than half that is needed
for SP1, but if you are that close, you need to start looking for ways
to free space or add another hard drive.)
Check with computer manufacturer to insure compatibility with SP1,
there are a few models where the company has said wait while the
manufacturer implements a fix.
Compaq and HP are 2 that I know of.
If you have HP or Compaq computer contact them before installing SP1:
http://www.hp.com/cposupport/personal_computing/support_doc/bph07866.h
tml#P1_65
There may still be issues with the HP/Compaq fix, so you may want to
wait
Download the Network Installation from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/servicepacks/sp1/
Be sure to get the 32bit version. (Windows XP Home and Pro)
DSL takes about 20 minutes, if you do not have high speed access, get
a friend to D/L SP1 for you.
Then burn it to a CD and keep for the future.
If possible run Ad-Aware and delete spyware:
http://www.webattack.com/get/adaware.shtml
Run chkdsk to check file system.
Perform Disk Cleanup (all boxes checked except Compress old files)
Perform Disk Defragmentation.
Ensure correct date and time.
Disconnect all peripherals (camera, scanner, printer etc)
When you are ready:
Create a Restore Point in System Restore
Go to MSCONFIG, uncheck all in Start-up tab.
Reboot the computer
Login as an Administrator, disable ALL unnecessary applications
including antivirus.
Install SP1 by double clicking on it, follow the prompts.
After SP1 install is completed, reboot, defrag.
Go back to MSCONFIG and recheck Normal Startup

Hi Marc.

Yes a repair install is a very good way of recovering from this type
of problem.

Unfortunately the original posting said this was a Compaq computer.

Doing a Repair Install requires a full install CD for Windows XP and
Compaq does not provide these with their machines, and neither do
other major brand manufacturers.

What they provide with their machines is a "System Recovery" CD set or
a hidden "System Recovery" partition on the hard drive. What these
contain is a full disk image of the original install and the recovery
process consists of totally wiping out everything on the hard drive
and then putting the "System Recovery" image into place. This puts
the machine back to the exact condition it was when it left the
factory, and destroys everything the user has installed or created
since then. This is not normally a desirable outcome.
