View Full Version : Probably a dumb question

I have McAfee virus - online virus protection. If I
would rather have Norton can I just install the Norton on
the computer and basically ignore the McAfee? Also, if I
have one online virus protecton (Norton or McAfee), do I
need the corresponding firewall, or can I get the
firewall from an entirely different company, such as the
one suggested by WIll Denny, the AVG? Karen

As for installing Norton, get rid of McAfee first, or at least be
certain that McAfee is _completely_ disabled. As for the firewall, you
may mix them, but why you'd want to do that is a question for which I
obviously have no answer.

Hi again Karen,
I'm not sure of the interoperability question between the AV software, but
with respect to a firewall, install something, the sooner the better.

If you have XP you can turn on the built-in firewall (aka ICF). Go to Start
| Help and search for ICF, within the returned links, click the link for
"Enable or disable Internet Connection Firewall". Read the notes for it so
you understand how restrictive it can be.

A Hardware solution - Router/Firewall - are also good bets.

Good luck!
