View Full Version : Windows Update web site

It has been a while since I checked, but since all this
came out about the blaster worm, I went to check the ms
windows update web site and I cannot access the site. I
have downloaded the patch from an email, but I am still
unable to access the web site. Is anyone else having
trouble accessing ms windows update website? I keep
getting the message " The page cannot be displayed".
Also I took the advice and checked to make sure my xp
firewall was enabled, and when I checked the system
services, the IPv6 Internet connection firewall service
had been stopped. I clicked the start link to start it and
I get the message "windows could not start the IPv6
Internet connection firewall on local computer. For more
information review the system event log. If this is a non-
microsoft service, contact the service vendor and refer to
error code - 2147014849."
Well, it is a microsoft service, And the event log shows :
"The IPv6 Internet Connection Firewall service terminated
with service-specific error 2147952447 (0x8007273F)."
Another entry showed:
"The IPv6 Internet Connection Firewall service was unable
to find support for IPv6. This may indicate that the IPv6
protocol suite is not installed or it failed to start.
The data is the error code."
I have no idea what all that means. Can someone help me
out here? The long and short of it is, I still show my
internet connection icons that appear with the lock icon
so as to indicate that the firewall is on, however, the
conflicting data entries in my event log and services list
is very confusing to me. I downloaded the patch, I ran the
scan and blaster worm was not found, I have zone alarm
installed (the free one), and my norton is up to date, So
why all this coincidental weird stuff lately? Anybody else
having any of these sorts of problems?
Thanks so much for your expert reply.

Dave,
You said you downloaded a patch thru an e-mail, thats sounds strange to me.
Where did the email come from?

If you are trying to cover from the blaster worm, instead of going to MS, go
to some of the various avtivirus sites like symantec who I hear have a fix.
Also many ISP's are posting fixes on their websites.

If you installed a patch from an email, be careful. Dont open any emails
from microsoft unless you have been told that its coming. Generally they are
fake emails containing viruses. MS never sends out service packs or fixes
via email.

I was at windows update an hour ago, seemed to be working okay. I did
notice that the list of available critical updates had decreased
markedly - usually they have a list of 8 for me that I haven't wanted.
This time there were only four, which included at least one new one.
I accessed via the URL, below, couldn't tell you if I was redirected
because I wasn't looking for that sort of thing.
