View Full Version : Upgrading ME to XP

I presently have a Compaq Presario Series 7000T, Rambus
Mem, 1.2 Mhz. The computer came with ME and I've
continually had problems, so, looking to upgrade to XP.
#1. can I?, #2. Are all the drivers for the peripherals
etc used by ME good for XP or must I download new ones?
And does an XP upgrade version maintain my current
drivers. #3. What else do I need to know - this subjet is
difficult to get info on.

1) Maybe
2) No, Yes to part 2 and No to part 2 unless XP has no other drivers native
for the device unless the ME drivers are not compatible in which case
they'll be disabled.
3)You need to run the upgrade advisor available at the link below. Overlook
nothing that it tells you might be a problem as anything about which it
might warn you can cause setup to halt.

Back to your original question. Also go to the Compaq site and be sure your
model has not issues with regard to XP or doesn't need special patches or
updates. This information should be at the Compaq web site.
Note of warning, you should try to find out the source of whatever issues
you are having before upgrading. The worst reason to move to a new
operating system is because you are having problems on your current setup.
New OSs rarely solve such problems and often make them worse. In the case
the problem is exacerbated because Windows ME is based on the 9x kernel and
XP on the NT kernel. That may seem "Greek" to you but understand, it means
the operating systems are quite different under the hood and you may have
issues with XP that you hadn't anticipated. First place to start working is
to try to identify what's causing problems for you now.

Tom,
According to Compaq, it is Windows XP ready and if you check the
documentation that came with the system, you might be eligible for an
upgrade. http://ap.compaq.com.sg/products/winxp . So yes, you can upgrade.
As for drivers, Windows XP should have drivers for most of your hardware and
if not, they should be available for download on the HP/Compaq site.

Greetings --
Have you made sure that your PC's hardware components are capable
of supporting WinXP? This information will be found at the PC's
manufacturer's web site, and on Microsoft's Hardware Compatibility
List: (http://www.microsoft.com/hcl/default.asp) Additionally, run
Microsoft WinXP Upgrade Advisor to see if you have any incompatible
hardware components or applications.
You should, before proceeding, take a few minutes to ensure that
there are WinXP device drivers available for all of the machine's
components. There may not be, if the PC was specifically designed for
Win98. Also bear in mind that PCs designed for and sold with Win9x/Me
very often do not meet WinXP's much more stringent hardware quality
requirements. This is particularly true of many models in Compaq's
consumer-class Presario product line or HP's consumer-class Pavilion
product line. WinXP, like WinNT and Win2K before it, is quite
sensitive to borderline defective hardware (particularly motherboards,
RAM and hard drives) that will still support Win9x.

Don't even think about upgrading the OS until you've stabilized the current
platform.
Fix your problems first since any OS change can not and will not fix
hardware issues or application incompatibility problems. You'll also find
that the cost of the upgrade can be higher than just the cost of the OS.
Depending on the applications you're running you may have to purchase XP
compatibility versions of your software.
