Hello all:
I installed the security patch for the RPC
vulnerability off the Microsoft website through the
Windows Update program. I can see the "KB823980" hotfix in
Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs. I can see the key in
the Registry under Update\SP-1\. The patch scan tool
downloaded from Microsoft tells me the machine is patched.
Yet, Windows Update brings up the security patch as a
critical update... I have no idea why. It is bothering me
because the knowledge base pulled up an article which said
that if the Windows Update pulls up an update of something
you had already installed, the previous installation
wasn't succesful.
Win Update also pulls up SP-1 as a critical update. My
attempt at installing SP-1 previously had failed. Does the
patch work only on XP w/ SP-1? Could this be the reason
why Win Update is bringing it up again?
Where do I go from here? Re-install the patch or re-
install the patch after re-installing SP-1?
Aarrrgggh!
Thanks,
VJ
