View Full Version : Documents and Settings network sharing rights

To start out with, I have a small home network that
includes three computers all running xp pro connected by
an ethernet switch. I use the network mainly to share
the internet connection(one main computer acts as a
gateway that dials into the internet) and share music
files.
Recently I discovered something called a roaming user
profile. It's my understanding that you can create a
user account, or profile, that stores files on one
computer's hd and then later login on any computer with
that profile. I'm sure everyone already knows about this
and I just haven't looked through the administrative
section of xp yet or something. But I wanted this
feature so I went under the 'computer management' console
in the admin. tools and then under 'users' I
added 'c:\documents and settings\Jon' under the profile
path because that is where my current settings and files
are for my computer.
Oh yes, I should probably mention that what I want to do
is make my profile from my downstairs (JMW) computer
accessable enough so that I can login with the same files
on my upstairs computer.
I managed to login with a roaming profile downstairs
while the files were on that local computer(the
downstairs one), but when I tried to login with the user
Jon upstairs, after I had gone under the users in
computer management and added \\JMW\C\Documents and
Settings\Jon (JMW is my comp. name) to the profile path,
it would say the resource was unaccessable and couldn't
be found. Well, I thought it should be accessable
because I had shared my C: drive on the network and I
could open it up remotely on my upstairs computer and go
under the Documents and Settings folder of the JMW comp.
But when I double-clicked on the folder Jon, it said I
didn't have the rights to open it! So that was it. I
had found the problem.
For some reason I couldn't remotely open up the profile
folders of other users, Programs folder, or the Windows
folder. I knew there had to be some security thing
stopping me preventing me from messing up my downstairs
computer from my upstairs computer or something like
that. But I haven't been able to find it and disable
it. So please help.
