When I try to install the downloaded Windows XP SP1,
I get the error window about incorrect product code. Is
there a simple procedure for correcting what is buried in
the Registry as Product Code, to make it agree with what
is glued on the back of my PC?

I suspect you might be seeing the same error described here:
326904 Error Message: The Product Key Used to Install Windows Is Invalid
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=326904
If not, let me know what the exact error message is and I can look into it
for you.

Hi,
If it is what Jospeh suspects, then you will need to do a repair
installation using a legitimate Product Key in order to change it. Follow
the instructions here so that you will not have to reinstall all your
programs and data:

In spite of all the above postings, it occurs to me that the
product code, which I believe is stored in Registry, is
incorrect. If someone would lead me to it, perhaps I could
correct it there........
(Please excuse me for starting a new thread
as 'Incorrect product key', and ignore it).

Greetings --
Are you trying to install Service Pack 1 and getting the
following:
The Product Key Used to Install Windows Is Invalid
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q326904
You need to purchase and use a legitimate full copy of WinXP Pro
to perform a repair (a.k.a. in-place upgrade) installation, using the
new CD and Product Key.
How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade of Windows XP

Remember, you should also report whomever sold you the pirated
software to your local law enforcement agency.
