After much diggin and learning of other people's troubles
and fixes (seems a pretty good way to learn) - stumbled on
a solution posted by the highly prolific Nicholas -

I created the CD and booted with it - it was very clean -
had me shakin' due to all of the disclaimers, but it was
MUCH better than the alternative of wiping the system...
