View Full Version : task manager not accessible
Scott

Hi,
When I hit CTL+ALT+DEL, the Task Manager icon shows up for
only a moment within the task bar but dissappears after
that. This does not allow me access to the Task Manager. I
am using Windows XP (Home).
I would expect the TM to open in a window and remain open
until I close it manually.
Any help would be appreciated. Please send responses to
Regards...
....Scott

w32.spybot worm disables NAV, Msconfig, Regedit and Task Manager:
http://www.bitdefender.com/bd/site/virusinfo.php?menu_id=1&v_id=114
Try this to:
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.spybot.worm.html
Rename regedit.exe to regedit.com then:
Download then Merge the edit on line 251 then delete all the files mentioned
in the above link.

Additionally, to enable access to Task Manager, click Start, Run and enter
CMD to open a command prompt window. Then issue the following commands:
COPY C:\Windows\System32\Taskmgr.exe C:\Windows\System32\Taskmgr1.exe
Then
C:\Windows\System32\Taskmgr1.exe This will open the copy of Task Manager,
and you should be able to use it normally.

You are infected with the W32 Spybot worm.

In addition to the virus information that Larry provided:
See www.dougknox.com, Win XP Utilities, Create Emergency Copies of Critical
XP System Utilities. This small VB Program will create backup, usable
copies of Task Manger, Regedit and MSConfig (named Taskmgr1.exe, Regedit.com
and MSConfig1.exe) in a new folder C:\EmergencyUtil. Many virus programs
will intercept these programs, based on their original file name. The
modified file names, allow them to be run. Open Windows Explorer to
C:\EmergencyUtil and double click the application you need. The next
revision will allow you to browse for the folder you want to place the
backups in.
