View Full Version : Safe Mode

I have the blaster worm on my computer. I have installed
the patch and firewall, but the repair program I
downloaded from Symantec cannot find the worm. The
instructions with the repair program say to restart in
safe mode, but I am unable to do that. I have tried to
follow the directions from Microsoft on doing it, but my
system (Compaq Presario 6000, from Staples) does not HAVE
the shut down protocol as described in the Microsfot
directions. I have a "Turn Off Computer" button,
followed by another screen allowing me to choose shut
down, restart, or stand by modes. Nowhere can I find any
way to get into safe mode, and I need to know if anyone
has any idea how I might do it. I'd love to get rid of
the worm! Thanks!

Thats not how Microsoft describes for you to boot into safe mode. You need
to reboot your computer and press F8 just before the Windows XP Loading
screen comes up.

It's also come to light that if you have a USB keyboard (with the broad flat
plug), you'll need to borrow one with a PS2 (the small round type)
connector plug, to press F8 as the USB driver only takes effect when windows
starts.

Your Kidding

Cindy,
When your computer restarts press the F8 key on your keyboard. The F8
key is in the top most row of keys on your keyboard. You may have to
do it a few times to get it to "catch" but you will see a option to
start the computer in safe mode.
On compaq's as soon as the Compaq logo shows up is the time to start
to press the F8 key repeatedly. Like every other second hit the F8
key. Again...it may take you a few times to reboot in order to "catch"
the option to go into safe mode but if you just persist you will do
it.

Not entirely true. Some systems have support for USB keyboards. BIOS setup
will make mention of "Legacy USB" or similar.
