Do the following:
Click Start, Run and enter CMD to open a Command Prompt window.
Then copy and paste the following commands into the Command Prompt window.
COPY %WINDIR%\System32\Taskmgr.exe %WINDIR%\System32\Taskmgr1.exe
COPY %WINDIR%\REGEDIT.EXE %WINDIR%\REGEDIT.COM
COPY %WINDIR%\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\MSCONFIG.EXE
%WINDIR%\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\MSCONFIG1.EXE
Then you can use the new file names to get into these utilities to use them
to help your troubleshooting.

See www.dougknox.com, Win XP Utilities, Create Emergency Copies of Critical
XP System Utilities. This small VB Program will create backup, usable
copies of Task Manger, Regedit and MSConfig (named Taskmgr1.exe, Regedit.com
and MSConfig1.exe) in a new folder C:\EmergencyUtil. Many virus programs
will intercept these programs, based on their original file name. The
modified file names, allow them to be run. Open Windows Explorer to
C:\EmergencyUtil and double click the application you need. The next
revision will allow you to browse for the folder you want to place the
backups in. Note: This utility has only been tested with Windows XP.

Excellent, Doug! Almost makes me feel like taking down the firewall so
I can try out your emergency kit.
*Almost*.

No reason to take down the firewall, Maureen. Its just a simple VB 6 EXE
file. It just uses your regular utilities, from your machine, by creating
copies of them with names the viruses don't try to stomp on. :) The EXE
just makes it quick and simple. Nothing a user couldn't do themselves.
Between that, and the Startup Programs Tracker (XP Utilitities), I hope that
this will be a tool that will help user's rid themselves of the recent spate
of virus infections.
The Startup Tracker scans the system for startup files, and presents the
results. It can create a log file that can be attached or pasted into a
newsgroup post for analysis. MVP Kelly recommended adding a scan for
running processes, to be included in the log file, so v3.0 was born
yesterday :)

Another tool of yours that I consider a staple is the one for the Registry
Editor (http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts_desc/regopen.htm). I used to
leave it alone as I didn't mind closing the branches and seeing what was
touched where and by what but the XP registry is humungous so have given up
that little past time ;)
