View Full Version : BIG PROBLEMS ! !

Windows XP crashed upon reboot from installing the UDF reader for the Iomega
CD Creator. Windows is still there but unaccesible. System restore is
non-functional from the set-up page. Same with: Last Known Good, Safe Mode,
Safe Mode with Networking, and Safe Mode with Command Prompt. System boots,
gets to set-up page, if one of the options is chosen system will then go
through a disk scanning operation (all results good) and then return to the
set-up page, to start all over again going nowhere from there. BIOS utility
indicates no problems. I don't have my XP installation disk, it was lost in
the shuffle of moving to a new apartment a couple of years ago. There is no
ARS. I did however do a full back-up to hard disk a couple of months ago. As
well as a System State back-up. I have a copy of the Recovery Console, but I
don't really know how to use it. Did try repairing the boot sector, with no
discernible changes, good or bad. Right now have the dead Windows drive
piggy-backed as slave to a small drive with ME, which puts me back online,
and I can roam through the dead Windows drive with Windows Explorer.
Questions: Any suggestions on where to go from here, where to find a
tutorial on the Recovery Console, and anything else that comes to mind? ! ?
Any assistance is deeply appreciated. Thanks.

Greetings --

You really need the original installation CD.

If it was a retail license and you have proof of purchase:

How to Replace Lost, Broken, or Missing Microsoft Software or Hardware

If it was an OEM license, you should contact whomever sold you the
OS; although very few manufacturers/vendors keep records of the
Product Keys they've sold, it's worth a try before you have to buy a
new license.
