Is that possible i scan virus outside of Windows

I have a Windows XP Home, for some reason computer got a
virus and it is unable to goes into Windows system and use
my Norton AntiVirus to scan my computer. I know in Windows
9x, I would be able to use DOS, but could anyone has idea
how to scan virus outside of Windows XP.

AVG scans pre OS load if you set it up to, it's free too.
