My home computer gets to the main XP screen but I cannot
select any of the users. Once when I was able to get in
I receivef an error message

"shut initated by NT Authority/system"

called by c/windows/system32/lsass.exe 1073741819

I have checked for the Blaster virus and I do not have
it.

Only advice I received from the OEM of the computer is
that Microsoft is aware of this bug, they do not have a
fix, therefore I need to reload the OS. Is this true??

How did you check for the blaster virus? The message you're receiving is
classic for this worm.
