View Full Version : Bad Sector on HDD?

I am running XP Home running NTFS.
I was having problems when doing a virus scan. My system would lock on the
same files every time. If I tried to open the files manually or even
highlight them with my cursor, the system would lock. I ended up deleting
the files from a command line.
I then decided to run a full scandisk and it would get end up locking up. I
then ran chkdsk on boot up, and it locked up at phase 4 checking file data.
I am leaning towards having a bad sector where it is locking the system
everytime that sector is accessed.
Does that sound right and does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix it?

Hi Jim,
It does sound like a damaged sector somewhere in there. While chkdsk can
often detect a damaged sector and relocate the information that was occupied
there, I would suggest going to the website of the manufacturer of the
affected harddrive and downloading their diagnostic tool and performing the
non-instrusive scans that will not erase your data.
