I have a windows XP professional original cd i bought
about a year ago. And every 2 months i reload it on my
computer since i do alot of browsing and others download
useless junk. However the last 2 installs have given me
errors. It will say cannot find the file needed to install
then it will ask me to retry and i will and it will go
through. However eventually i get the blue screen of
death sometime during the install with a stop error.
After reformatting and reinstalling eventually I get it to
work after the 20th time or something. I'm tired of doing
it until it goes through. I thought maybe it was the
disk, so i tried an old copy of windows ME i had lying
around and it also gave me an error. Any suggestions?

As mentioned this is classic to flaky RAM. If you know your way around the
inside of the box try reseating your RAM modules. If the problem persists
and you have more than one stick try removing a stick and see if you can get
XP to install. Swap out if that doesn't work.

A free memory tester can be downloaded from here http://www.memtest86.com/ .
The app can be run from floppy or CD. It will take several hours to complete
so set it to run overnight if you use it.
