shortcuts on desktop

I used to have a short cut to my CD Rom on the desktop.
It quit working properly. When I click on it generates a
window say it is searching for it and use 'browse' to
locate it. I deleted it and dragged it again from My
Computer Window to the Desktop and chose create a
shortcut here. The new one does not work either. The
new one does not have the drive letter behind the CD Rom
Icon as before i.e. CD Rom (E). My CD-RW drive works
fine as shows as CD-RW (D). Any help would be
appreciated.

It's a side effect from one of the recent Windows Updates. Microsoft is
aware of the problem and working on a remedy.
