View Full Version : Chkdsk and Defrag with WinXP

With Windows 98SE I was always very aware of the interferences caused by
background running programs when trying to run Scandisk or Defrag. These
interferences (due to periodic accesses with the HD) usually prevented
Scandisk or Defrag from ever going to completion. So I always ran Scandisk
in DOS mode, and ran Defrag in Safe Mode. This avoided such interferences.

Now that I have Windows XP Pro, and will be using Chkdsk (in place of
Scandisk) and Defrag, are there similar steps that should be taken, or will
they run to completion in Normal Mode without interferences?

Thanks.

They'll usually run just fine, though you'll not be able to run ChkDsk on C:
without a reboot. Defrag is still going to be affected by other programs
running in the background which are writing to the partition you're
defragging.
