Windows XP installed, can't get to desktop

When workstation boots, it allows you to input user name
and password but it goes to a grey screen with a globe in
the background.

How about in Safe mode?
What if you logon as Administrator?
What were you last doing with this machine?
Update/upgrade/install anything lately?
