Download and install TweakUI for XP,
www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp In the Explorer
section, scroll down and check Use Classic Search in Explorer.

Or click Start, Run and enter REGEDIT Go to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\Cabinet
State

Look in the right pane for a value called Use Search Asst. If it exists,
double click it and change the value to "no" without the quotes. If it
doesn't exist, right click in the right pane, select New, String value, and
name it Use Search Asst. Double click the new value and enter "no", without
the quotes.

Okay, I used TweakUI to switch to classic search. But it still doesn't
open in a separate window like it did in win98. Is there any way to do
that? Thanks

How are you trying to activate Search?

My problem is sort of the opposite. I can't get Rover back. I don't have
the option to customize the search. TweakUI shows that I have "Classic
Search" _unchecked_, but I have the Windows 2000-style search. I want the
Search Companion back. How?

Thanks, I forgot about these other ways.

Here are the values contained in that key:

FullPath REG_DWORD 1
FullPathAddress REG_DWORD 1
Settings REG_BINARY 0c 00 02 00 1b 01 06 00 60 00 00 00

Any other suggestions?

Not that I know of. TweakUI (and regedit) can turn off the search
assistant, but the underlying search engine is not changed
