I got this email from Microsoft and it has an .exe
attached name update 2931.exe When I go to launch it my
virus protector says it has a virus and will not let me
save it and install it. It will also not let me run it
from the email message.

I am trying to find out if Microsoft would send out
updates via mail?

A devious sender is "spoofing" Microsoft and attempting to deceive you
into installing a malicious VIRUS in your computer! Delete the VIRUS
laden message immediately!

Bernie,

Good for you for having up-to-date virus definitions!!

These emails are bogus and the attachments are virus infected - delete them
immediately. FYI: Microsoft never sends patches/fixes/updates or the like
as attachments to emails. Read more about that at:

Microsoft never sends unsolicited files by email.
DO NOT open the file--it is NOT from MS.
REPEAT:Microsoft NEVER sends unsolicited files by email.

It is a virus masquerading as MS security.
The most recent is W32/Swen@MM which can be removed with Stinger
http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/

The others circulating are dumaru.b

or a variant of the gibe worm.
Removal tool for gibe is at
