Recently, I have been receiving frequent pop-up messages
from my real-time antivirus scanner (eTrust InoculateIT),
which are also reported in the Application Event Viewer.
These indicate that something is trying to launch PIF and
SCR files on my machine. The message is typically as
follows
"An unauthorized Application C:\WINDOWS\_DEFAULT.PIF has
been prohibited from execution. Machine: BASE2915, User:
System."
The program may vary, but it is usually a PIF or SCR
extension, and the filename ususally begins with an
underscore. Typically the path is to the Recycle folder
or the System Volume Info folder. Every now & then I will
receive a pop-up advising me to launch the AV program
because of extensive infection. No infection is reported,
beyond the above warnings. I have Spybot, Spyblaster, &
ZoneAlarm Pro installed, and did not have a problem until
an acquanintance downloaded a filesharing program
(iMesh). I cleaned this up, and all looked good until
these messages. Anyone have any ideas?
