Program Not Responding-External Links

I seem to be having a problem that has just started today. Whenever I click on a link, say from an email, the page freezes and I can't get the link to open or close the page where the link was. This is happening in everything. I clicked on a link from the Help and Support area in XP and that stopped responding. Its happened with web pages and emails also. Any suggestions?

Given everything going on right now, have you run a virus scan lately? Be
sure your antivirus software has the latest updates if you are going to run
a scan now.

Funny you should say that, I just did run a scan and it did find a virus. However, the virus came after this problem started. As soon as the virus was on the computer the virus software picked it straight up. I have it set to get updates etc everyday and I double checked that it was uptodate before I did the scan. Oh, and the virus came after I posted here, so I seriously doubt that it would have been posted to here.

I'm still having the problem and I can't work out for the life of me why? I have never had this problem before.

I should have probably included that if a text link is available, rather than a button, I can right-click and get it to open in a new window but I can't click on it or any other type normally.

Have you tried using System Restore to take you back to a time prior to when
this began. Start\All Programs\Accessories\System Tools\System Restore.

If this resolves it, check to be sure your AV software is still up to date
and run the scan again to make sure your system is still clean.

When 'funny things' (my description) happen while operating the
computer I first think of a virus or worm, however I shut down
the computer. Then wait for a couple of minutes and start the
computer. Most 'funny things' do not reappear.

Hope this will help in your future cases.

Please check your time ZONE. It is still set to -0700, which is correct for Redmond, Washington. But you are in Australia, aren't you?

You should really do the virus scan before you shut down. While it's true,
quite often simply rebooting can resolve an issue, if you do have a virus,
you really don't want to shut down or reboot before eradicating it.

Until you pointed this out I had no idea! The time was showing right in the task bar, it didn't occur to check the time zone. duh!

How come though when I changed the time zone, the actual time changed? To about 4hrs later than what it actually is?

I too thought it was a virus and did as you and other's had suggested and did a scan, however no virus to explain what had happened. I also did what you suggested and rebooted/shut down and those 'funny things' (which I tend to say aswell) stopped happening. The problem hasn't come back as yet, hopefully it won't either!

I wouldn't have know that until I saw it written. Thankfully though I had done a scan before shutting down. That is something to keep in mind for future hassles though.
