I strongly suspect that I started receiving these fake MS
emails by the dozen because I posted my real email address
elsewhere on the MS help newsgroup. Might I be right? Can
someone give a bit of guidance please on adding anti-spam
chaff to one's email address - like how it works, and when
to do it?

What kind of email? hotmail? That has its own spam filter.
If in outlook, get SpamAssassin for outlook is my recommendation, or get an
email client that is better with filtering that stuff, such as Kmail.
