View Full Version : CD Rom shortcut not working properly

I have both a CD-RW and DVD drive on my system. I created shortcuts to these
drives on my desktop. Whenever I right-click to eject the tray on either
drive, I get a search dialog which points me to some other program (or asks
me to delete the shortcut). I have used TweakUI to re-associate icons with
their origins. I have deleted the shortcuts and created them anew. All with
the same result. The drives themselves are in good working order (recognized
by both BIOS and WindowsXP Home). I have full functionality with these
drives, except for this little annoyance! I have even gone so far as to
uninstall the drives and reinstall them in WinXP. All to no avail. Any help
you give is appreciated...

Check your system for Security Patch #821557, while we've only seen this
issue on SP1 systems, it's possible it might also happen on systems not
upgraded. There is a problem with that patch that causes the symptoms you
describe. Go to Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel, scroll your list for
"hotfixes" and see if such a number is referenced there.

If you don't see it, go to Windows update, let it scan your system, when
finished, look for update history in the left pane and look for that
security patch as it should tell you the reference number in Add/Remove.
When you find it, use Add/Remove to remove it or use System Restore to take
you back to a time prior to when that patch was installed. Start\All
Programs\Accessories\System Tools\System Restore.

I was afraid you were going to say that. I have sp1 installed and also the
patch you mentioned. It was after I received this patch that the problem
showed up.... I cannot use System Restore to go back before the time I got
the patch because I had to disable System restore in order to run the
Blaster worm cleaner. (I have since restarted System Restore, but that date
would no longer be available). LOL. I didn't have the worm because I do
regular updates and practice safe computing. :-) I will remove the update in
question (I never did find out what it was supposed to fix).

One more question... Will my system be vulnerable if I remove this patch? Is
the same problem addressed with other security patches (in this case it's
the Buffer overrun being exploited in the Windows shell).

I don't know if they've replaced that specific patch. However, if you keep
your antivirus software up to date and scan regularly and make a habit of
scanning all attachments before opening them as well as any downloaded
files, especially from file sharing sites, you should be fine. Both a
firewall and a router are also a big help in securing your system.
