What, specifically, is(are) the symptom(s)?
Have you looked at www.hp.com to see if an updated driver for this
devices is on offer?

Hunch: broken printer? Do you have way to try another printer on same
machine, or that HP printer on different machine. XP's printing is
basically generic to a "printer driver" and driver runs the process.
Probably need to figure out if it's the printer (driver or hardware) or
XP. My hunch worth further exploration is that the printer is broke.

One thing I would look at is in the Printer properties.
If you go to Start - Control Panel - printers and faxes,
right click on your printer and go to properties.
From there, choose the Advanced Tab.
There are spool settings on this tab, and you want to
choose " Start printing after last page is spooled "
Now apply this setting and test again !
Happy printing : )

Can't really help much, but if you havn't got the set-up guide and manual,
then they are available for download at link below.
By the way, are you sure that you are using XP-driver for the printer ?

Power off printer, then power back on to see if USB will detect it.
